Sunday in Outer Blogness: Religious Diversity Edition!

chanson, November 1, 2009

Religions are so different, yet so full of parallels! Andrew has found his mirror image in the world of Scientology! And speaking of another defector from Scientology, Jim Downey observes:

he was willing to go along with their bullshit requirements and commands, including watching his own family suffer from “disconnection,” for 35 years, but the leader of the church being wishy-washy on responding to his queries about a political question tips the balance and pushes him to resign. Huh?

Weirdly, that doesn’t seem surprising to me at all. People are willing to take God’s word for it when it comes to a lot of crazy things, but they have to have confidence that they’ve found God’s real mouthpiece…

In other houses of Israel, Runtu recounts a childhood tale of being the odd man out, Chosen Among the Jewish Gentiles. (Sean, as a kid, didn’t even fit in among the Mormons. And ECS is still having trouble fitting in with the Mormons.) A little further afield, the Swearing Elders report that the Book of Mormon has been translated into Klingon!

Philomytha has been busy unintentionally improving people’s impressions of Mormons. On the other hand, General J. C. Christian questions what kind of Mormon example Glenn Beck is setting — promoting Bible-based but not BoM and PoGP-based science and history in schools!

For Mormons, which is the touchiest subject? Is it polygamy? Modern-day polygamists abusing teenage girls? Nope, I think it’s financial dealings of the CoJCoL-dS. Mormon Coffee made an interesting new point about the church’s tax status, and — true to form, and unlike the polygamy posts — that’s the one that generates 115 comments worth of indignant debate!!

In writing projects, we’ve got at least three on the NaNoWriMo wagon (and one NaBloPoMo). Plus, Matt is organizing a YouTube Exmo advert challenge and USU Shaft is looking for guest bloggers for their guest blogger series. And if you still can’t find enough outlets for your creative talents, remember that we like guest posts here at Main Street Plaza as well. 😀

‘Till next week!
