And while Gov. Herbert is ready to tap Utah’s “rainy day” fund and lay off teachers in his state, this wannabe “health care leader” continues to oppose any tobacco tax hikes.
Excellent post Chino…The legislative session results in more attacks on persona freedom. My concern is that we will push for less government intervention so the righteouslature can expand the power of the theocracy. We need the federal government to protect those of us who are disciples of reason.
I’ve often thought that I wouldn’t mind moving back to Utah to be closer to family. The lunatics in the state legislature are making it much easier to stay away!!

The report mentions no suspect or motive, but it’s a reminder that Utah’s lunatic leadership is playing with fire with all their over-the-top 10th amendment posturing.
Social security is the only pension program that has never stopped paying. It has reduced senior poverty by leaps and bounds.
The state of Utah is hardly in a position to feed its seniors. If any one state instituted a pay roll tax to take care of our parents and grandparents, businesses would leave the state in droves.
That’s how markets work. Only the federal government has the ability to protect the rights of elderly Americans.
Is it just me or was the woman at the end the “token” woman who didn’t show up in anything else? Don’t misunderstand, I’m all for states rights, but unfortunately it is up to the federal government to make the states to what is right. If the federal government didn’t intervene think of what wouldn’t have happened, Brown v. Board of Education, Roe v. Wade, Civil Rights Act of 1964.

I think this Governor is absolutely right. Any healthcare reform ought to be done with respect to the opinions of the governors. Furthermore, all these social programs are killing this country. This country was not founded on the idea that others can take care of your needs for you. Self-reliance has always been the hallmark of America, or at least until FDR came into the picture. Let’s stop the march to Socialism and return to the policies that made this country great.
Good to meet you, Libertarian. I would like to know how self-reliance is supposed to work when you get a two million dollar bill after you and your children have been in a car accident or when your wife gets cancer.
There are only very few people who are wealthy enough to do that. Besides, it would be wasteful if everybody had to set aside millions of dollars for improbable but possible health emergencies.
That’s why we have insurance where people cooperate to share risk. It’s more efficient and more effective.
The western world got rich not because people are self-reliant but because people cooperate with one another in corporations, families, neighborhoods, markets, and nations.
Self-reliance is the road to poverty. Cooperation creates wealth.
Among other things, Adam Smith demonstrated that the division of labor is more efficient than doing everything yourself.
That includes insurance, which is a form of risk sharing, and banks, which collect money so that small savings can accumulate to big investments.
However, when we pay health insurance for decades, we need to be sure that the corporation actually sustains us when we get sick. When we deposit money with a bank, we have to be sure that we will get the money back.
Since it isn’t in the self-interest of people to give away money, insurances and banks can only work if there is government oversight.
Besides, sick people cannot be self-reliant, nor can children or the elderly.
