Wednesday in Outer Blogness: Pi Day Edition!

chanson, March 15, 2011November 9, 2011

OK, so I missed Sunday (and I actually missed Pi Day, too), but — since I was busy last Sunday and I’ll be busy next Sunday — I figured I’d try to shoot for a round-up somewhere in the middle. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Anyway, as you know, the big news is the disaster in Japan. It’s hard to round up the news round-ups because it’s not clear it’s over or how things will end up. But there’s some interesting explanation, analysis, personal reactions, and ways to help. Plus, there’s the inevitable “Is it the end-times?” discussion, with its corresponding meta-discussion.

There was also International Women’s Day, which brought some fascinating looks at Mormon women’s history with the priesthood and with object lessons. Also in the week’s wild world of gender, we have both women and men being true to themselves through LDS theater, beautiful male bodies, and learning what it means to be gay, plus further analysis of marriage.

Then there were a number of personal stories about different stages of moving on. Some are sending in resignation, receiving the confirmation letter, coming out to family, explaining temple clothes to the kids, getting over it, and looking back on how their lives have changed! (Why not try curiosity as a purpose of life?)

In entertainment, there was some hilarious discussion of BY-Zoology, send-ups of Mormonism in video and comics, the conspiracy that is grammar, an unintentionally funny/sad video on Christian marriage, and Mormons and Evangelical Christians compare their theological beliefs!

And, since I don’t want to ignore politics completely, I will just dump here a list of interesting mystery links! Also note, here’s another review of one of Johnny Townsend’s short stories — I’ve just finished enjoying two others, and am thinking about what to say about them. Have a great week-and-a-half! 😀

Mormon royalty, that is. With Pioneer Day coming up, it’s time to remember whether you are a direct descendant of Brigham Young or not. ‘Cause, being royalty makes things a little different. And while I’m interested in exploring my own pioneer heritage, I get how alienating this ancestor worship is…

I have often heard the criticism that Latter-day Saints classify everyone who disagrees with our beliefs as “anti-Mormon.” Of course, the people who say this are usually anti-Mormons. Am I proving their point? I don’t think so. — McKay Coppins, Mormon Times Uh… How to begin to respond to such…

Sunday in Outer Blogness: What women want edition!

March 9, 2014

You may have heard that the New York Times published an article on female Mormon missionaries and how cool they are! Mormon women like it for its tone and accuracy: The tone was perfect—respectful without lapsing into the reverence or romanticizing a church publication so often displays for missionary work;…

A family in our ward celebrates pi day every year. They invite a bunch of people from the ward over for evening refreshments. Everyone is encouraged to bring a pie.

Usually my wife makes a pretty mean crabapple pie. But she had a tiring week this week. So I just bought one at Safeway instead.

    Oh well…

Shameless self-promotion: FWIW, I also wrote a personal reaction to the quake/tsunami.

We really should celebrate pi days.

    pi is 3.1415…

So we should celebrate March 14 and 15.

    Just saying.

Right, or perhaps it should be 3 (March) 14, at 15:93. OK, well 15:00 makes sense (in Europe and in the military), but the 93 minutes part is where it starts to break down…

Hi Chanson. I’m very late with this, but I wanted to say thanks for including my post in your Pi Day blogging summary—and for all the other links to some cool posts. (I was gonna email you, but I didn’t see an email address on your profile). Cheers!
