Call for Submissions

Johnny Townsend, November 21, 2011December 5, 2011

I am accepting short stories dealing with unconventional Mormons for an anthology to be called “Marginal Mormons.” The stories should be 25 pages or shorter, though length will not necessarily disqualify a submission. Payment will be $20 and one copy of the book, in exchange for perpetual, non-exclusive rights. The stories may be original or previously published, as long as you currently retain the rights. I am not particularly impressed with faith-promoting stories, but I am also not looking to attack the Church. I simply want stories that show unconventional Mormons or new interpretations of doctrine or history. The story does not need to be disturbing but should certainly be thought-provoking.

Please email any stories in the body of the email, but also include them as an attachment. Send to johnnyjohnnyt at yahoo dot com.

“These beautifully flawed vessels”: The Conclusion of ExMormon!

I love to joke around. I’ve got the perfect joke for just this occasion. It’s an oldie, so stop Me if you’ve heard it: Way back when Jesus and I were creating the world, I turned to Him and said “Hey Jesus, let’s create a really gorgeous mountainous region, with…

Mormon Erotica, Mormon Romance

January 17, 2018September 14, 2024

Mormon Erotica, the new novel from Donna Banta, is a joyous page-turner that, despite the title, is far more concerned with love and romance than sex. While the book contains plenty of reflection on Mormon attitudes toward sex and marriage, the action depicted is strictly PG. As with so many…

on “American Trinity”

September 13, 2024

David Pace’s American Trinity is a striking collection of twelve short stories tied together by the common thread of Mormonism. The stories were written over the past several decades, and draw from his lifelong experiences with the church. These experiences are not insignificant, and I found myself somewhat dismayed to hear some…

    Oh thank God!

When I first saw this, I thought it said “Call for Submission.” I thought it was a fireside or something.

I hope others are as excited about this project as I am, and you writers out there are thinking about your submissions!

I know I’ve written several times here at MSP about a nebulous plan to try to compile and edit an anthology of stories that touch on Mormonism — without putting the focus on whether Mormonism is true/false/good/bad. Yet, it has become increasingly clear that I don’t have the skill or drive to do it myself. I can hardly think of a better person to take on the task than Johnny Townsend — he’s an excellent writer with a fascinating take on Mormonism.

    Fiction or nonfiction?

Can they have been previously published online?

My reading is that it should be fiction (but contact JT for the final word). Published (online or otherwise) is fine, as long as you hold the publishing rights.
