LDS Church is “kicking against the pricks” on gay marriage

profxm, August 1, 2012August 1, 2012

So, get this… A center at BYU collated some survey numbers and guess what is up in Utah: support for civil unions and same-sex marriage. Check out some of their figures. First, all Utah voters:

Second, political party identification:

Third, by religion:

No surprise that the nonreligious support civil unions and same-sex marriage, though I wonder how many are former Mormons. But look at the trend for Mormons – in the last 8 years opposition has gone from 69% to 38%.

The conclusion: LDS Church efforts opposing same sex marriage aren’t even working with Mormons! Just how out of touch is the octogenarian leadership of the religion with the 21st century and the members? Oh, I’d say about 62% out of touch! 😉

You know what needs to happen? The HRC needs to team up with Dustin Lance Black(to write, produce and direct) and Bruce Bastian(to fund) to run an ad campaign in Utah showing how much money the LDS Church is funneling into NOM. Now that would be fun to watch!

Note: In case you didn’t get my reference above, “kicking against the pricks” means being stubborn to the point of self-harm.

Today I read some articles by Valerie Hudson, a Mormon feminist and ex-BYU Poly Sci professor who’s written on interesting topics like the relationship of gender equality to state security. Here at MSP, we talked about her here. Back in 2009, she created some hubbub regarding the “real teleos” of…

The Church recently launched a site titled Love One Another: A Discussion on Same-Sex Attraction (at the URL: www.mormonsandgays.org). Here is a useful link that centralizes many responses to the new site. John Gustav-Wrathall writes at D&S that “Now is the Time” for dialogue, because this new site demonstrates that…

I think outside Utah the numbers would be significantly higher for support of civil unions. Most of the members who grew up here in Oregon (basically not transplants from Oregon or Idaho) are willing to say publicly that they are in favor of civil unions. I think that got easier after the state had an amendment to the constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman. After that, there wasn’t much said about opposition to civil unions. Since at least half of church members are either democrats or not affiliated with any party, I think that the general approval, at least for civil unions will slowly continue to grow.
