A friend of mine (who works at Yale) sent me this story about a Yale student who staged several incidents to make it seem as though he was being persecuted for his conservative views. While I am always amazed at the lengths people will go to in order to make a point or try to bolster their argument, what this really made me think of was the push-polling in New Hampshire that was attacking Mormonism. McCain is still pushing for this to be investigated but Romney doesn’t seem interested. I’m leaning toward it having been Mitt Romney’s supporters who did it. Thoughts?

New Field Poll
Via Chino Blanco, the newest Field poll: During the past two months, voter opposition has increased toward Proposition 8, the state constitutional amendment on the November ballot which would ban same-sex marriages. At present just 38% of likely voters are backing the initiative, while 55% are intending to vote No….
mindless, outwardly moral, drones
I recently read the book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man. While the book itself is over-rated and not as good as I had hoped, there was a point made in the book that made me think of Mormonism. The author, John Perkins, talks about the “new army” of empires…
Why Mormons Are Not Conservatives
Andrew Sullivan makes an interesting point: Most Americans have a healthy respect for religious teaching but in their lives give greater preference to common sense and practical experience. That includes almost all religious groups as well – Catholics, in particular, show conservative tendencies. The exceptions? Evangelicals and Mormons and Jehovah’s…
Anything is possible but the articles that you are linking are short on evidence.
I’m purely speculating at this point. It seems to me that conservatives “love” the persecution complex. I’m working on a project right now looking at the rhetoric of conservative Christians and boy do they think they are being persecuted by secular people. They talk about it more than just about anything else. Social psychological we know that a “powerful” outgroup works great to maintain unity and solidarity (which is likely why they do it). So, I’m just speculating that it was Romney’s camp that did it. I have no evidence 😉
Here is an article that provides fairly detailed information. They are also linking to the Romney campaign’s rebuttal.
I have not made up my mind yet.
There are plenty of persecution complexes out there. Monitor Democratic Underground or Daily Kos and you hear about how evil the “corporate media” is and other statements that are mirror-images to what conservatives say.
IMHO it is human nature, whatever your political persuasion, to assume that you are under attack.
Actually, the corporate bias of American mass media has been empirically established. The research was testing liberal media bias accusations and found corporate bias instead.
Hey…I think that this post is a veiled attack on me and my beliefs… 🙂
Let me assure you, dpc, it’s way too vacuous for that.
My apologies for the previous remark, Exmoron. I had mistakenly assumed that I was talking about my own post.
