Sunday in Outer Blogness: Reflection Edition

aerin64, July 13, 2014

Chanson asked me to fill in for SiOB this week – I think it’s been a quiet week. (Sort of like Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon – it’s always a quiet week).

But this week is quiet for many reasons – perhaps we’re all still reacting (or not reacting) to the news of Kate Kelly’s excommunication – and the other active members who have been penalized or silenced. Still others are realizing that they can no longer stay in a church that would treat its members this way, and are leaving.

The silence from the church office building is resounding. Many of us here at MSP are quite familiar with the silence.

Then, there have been further tragedies – a bloggernacle member was killed in a tragic accident. And a family was murdered outside the Houston suburbs.

Some may simply be enjoying the World Cup, or the beautiful July weather. Whatever the case may be – have a wonderful, peaceful week.

I’m often torn when I think about religion. As aerin noted last week, sometimes religion does seem to be authentically helpful for some people. But then there are people like the Copelands, of Texas, who preach the “prosperity gospel,” which is basically fraud (promising something you don’t deliver to get…

As difficult as it may be to believe for some non mormons, this statement was not made in the height of 1950s America or during the nineteenth century abolitionist movement. It was made this past April 2007 by the leader of the mormon church, whom mormons believe talks directly to…

Not exactly Mormon related, but the hot topic of the past week-and-a-half was the hacking of Ashley Madison — exposing adulterers — including everybody’s favorite sleazy hypocrite: Josh Duggar. Apparently Josh Duggar apologised to his fans (and Jesus), but he should really be apologising to the LGBT couples out there…

    Hi folks — sorry about the lack of SiOB this week. I asked someone to fill in for me because I still have limited Internet, so maybe it will appear later… And anyway, everything will be back to normal soon. 😉

    Note to MSP authors — there’s a bit of a technical problem logging in at the moment. You may notice that if you try to log in, it hangs. It’s actually possible to log in, it’s just that there’s an unknown problem with loading the “dashboard” page. After attempting to log in, you can open MSP in a new tab of your browser, and you will be logged in. From the top menu bar, you can navigate to one of the other admin pages.

    Chanson, I recognize that you have a life outside of this blog, but my Sunday church experience just isn’t the same when I don’t have “Sunday in Outer Blogness” links to keep me entertained.

    Wishing you well.

    @4 Thanks Utahhiker801!!

    Here’s the situation: I just got back from a slightly-more-than-two week vacation in Paris. Since I live in Switzerland, visiting Paris is normally not a big deal, but it was tricky for me to spend time surfing the Internet because whenever we were back at the apartment where we were staying, my kids would immediately hog my computer to watch Minecraft and PvZ videos on YouTube. Also, I was busy writing the script for a super-awesome comic book adventure series I’m planning. 😉

    This weekend — unfortunately! — I have to skip SiOB again because I’ll be on route to Camp Quest Switzerland where I’ll be volunteering for the week. I’ve asked my cousin Aerin to fill in for me again.

    At the end of July, though, vacation season will be over and SiOB will be back as usual. 😀

    @6 I know, I’d love to be following this story in real time!! But I have no choice but to catch up when I get back…
